Zechariah 7 to 14

Zechariah 7 to 14

Zechariah is divided into two sections, 1 – 6, and 7 – 14. The ending of this first section uses an historical event as a sign and image. The high priest is crowned! The priests were out of the tribe of Levi, the kings out of the tribe of Judah! There is coming one that would combine these two functions! Like Melchizedek of old, he would be both priest and king. His name? The Branch (cp. Zech. 3:8; Isa. 11:1; Jer. 23:5). He would build the temple. Such building would include the help of those who were ‘afar off’.

For those who know the New Testament story, the priest/king is here, it is Jesus. His temple is built of living stones. Those who were ‘afar off’ have been included. In His kingdom there is peace. The promises of God have been fulfilled in the Son of God, Jesus. God can be trusted! God yet rules in (and over) the kingdoms of men.  Being part of this has the same condition as it did for those in Zechariah’s day: "... And it will take place if you completely obey the Lord your God.” (Zech. 6:15). Are you obeying the LORD?
