The Greatness of Jesus - Colossians 1
It is often pointed out that whereas Ephesians emphasizes the body with Jesus as its head, Colossians emphasizes the very nature of Jesus. This may not be as apparent to most readers as the 'scholars' seem to think, but Colossians does contain several of the most pointed statements concerning who Jesus is. In particular you should notice 1:13-20.
He is the beloved Son of God (13) and the king over His kingdom (vs. 13). It is only in Jesus that men are redeemed and have their sins forgiven (14). He is the very image of the invisible God (His character and NOT his physical body).
He is the preeminent one of creation (i.e., the position and privilege of firstborn) (15). This is not indicating that he was 'first created', but rather his position over all of creation because he 1) created all things, 2) is before all things, 3) holds all things together, and 4) all things were created for Him. This idea is repeated in that He is the firstborn of the dead THAT (in order that, to the purpose that) he might be preeminent (vs. 18). He is said to be preeminent FOR (because, stating the reason for) in him dwells all the fullness of God (19).
He is the head over all things to the church, which is His body (18). It is then further emphasized that it is through Him that ALL THINGS will be reconciled unto God. In order to accomplish this he gave his life upon the cross. He is our savior, redeemer, and king. Let us hold fast to our trust in Him.
