A Better Hope – Hebrews 7

A Better Hope – Hebrews 7

18 For, on the one hand, there is a setting aside of a former commandment because of its weakness and uselessness 19 (for the Law made nothing perfect), and on the other hand there is a bringing in of a better hope, through which we draw near to God” (Hebrews 7:18-19).

There was an ordained priesthood in the first (old) covenant: it was according to the order of Levi. All of the priests were to be of the tribe of Levi and from the family of Aaron. Then Jesus is born. The son of David. Of the tribe of JUDAH. Of the tribe that Moses spoke NOTHING about priesthood.  Jesus CAN NOT be a priest under the authority of the first covenant! But, if there is a change to the covenant, and there would have to be in order for Jesus to serve as a High Priest, then “of necessity there takes place a change of law also” (Heb. 7:12).  Jesus IS our High Priest (read Heb. 8:1-2), hence we KNOW that there was a change of law. We have changed from the first covenant to the second covenant, from the old to the new.

The first was set aside because of its weakness: it could NOT make the people complete (Heb. 7:11). Thus, Jesus “has become the guarantee of A BETTER COVENANT (Heb. 7:22). With the bringing in of this better covenant, there was “a bringing in of a better hope” (Heb. 7:18)

It is by THIS hope, according to THIS covenant that “we draw near to God” (Heb. 7:19). Are you living according to this new covenant and drawing near to God?
