Jesus King of the Jews - Matt 27

Jesus King of the Jews - Matt 27

"Now Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” Jesus said, “You have said so" (Matt. 27:11).

The Jewish leaders were upset because Jesus claimed to be the Son of God (Matt. 26:63-65). That was an insufficient charge to have the Roman governor put Jesus to death, so they bring the charge of 'making himself King' (Luke 23:2). Pilate therefore asked him directly: "Are you the King of the Jews?"

Reading Matthew provides us with understanding of the answer to Pilate's question:

·       He is the promised son of David, the King of Israel - 1:1

·       He was born King of the Jews - 2:1

·       He was to receive the throne of David - Luke

·       Upon His last entrance into Jerusalem, He was proclaimed to be the King - 21:5

·       The Roman soldiers mocked him as King - 27:29

·       The title of King was placed on His cross - 27:37

·       The Jewish scoffers mocked him as King - 27:42

·       As the Psalmist foretold: Though all the people gather together against Him, yet God sat him as King upon the throne (Ps. 2).

·       They killed their King, God raised him from the dead and placed Him upon the eternal throne. (cp. Acts 2 sermon).

·       He is King of Kings and Lord of Lord (Rev. 17:14; 19:16).

·       As King, He has authority in heaven and upon earth (Matt. 28:18).

The remaining question is simple but profound: is He YOUR King? Does HE rule in your life? Do you do everything in His name? With Him as our king, we are more than conquerors in every aspect of life and death. Without Him, we are lost.
