What Is Truth - John 18

What Is Truth - John 18

In John 18, Pilate asked the question that confronts everyone: What is truth? John has constantly used the word to describe the person and teaching of Jesus. Follow this simple arrangement of some of John's statements concerning truth.

John 18:38 — Pilate said to him, “What is truth?”

John 18:37 — Then Pilate said to him, “So you are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world—to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.”

John 14:6 — Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

John 1:14 — And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

John 1:17 — For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

John 8:31-32 — So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

John 17:8 — For I have given them the words that you gave me, and they have received them and have come to know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent me.

John 17:17 — Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.

He affirmed He told them the truth. They didn't believe Him and thus set out to kill him.

John 8:40 ---  but now you seek to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. This is not what Abraham did.

John 8:45  -- But because I tell the truth, you do not believe me.

John 8:46  -- which one of you convicts me of sin? If I tell the truth, why do you not believe me?

John bore witness: Jesus is the lamb of God that takes away the sin of the World –

John 5:33 — 33 You sent to John, and he has borne witness to the truth.

The Spirit of Truth – would guide apostles into ALL TRUTH

John 14:17 — even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.

John 15:26 — “But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about me.

John 16:7 — Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.

John 16:13 — When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.

Untruth is of the devil…

John 8:44  --- You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father's desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

John's gospel  thus told the truth about Jesus –

John 19:35 — He who saw it has borne witness—his testimony is true, and he knows that he is telling the truth—that you also may believe.

Believe what?  The truth of the gospel as recorded by John

John 20:31 —  but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
