Mark 5 – Spirit Testimony Concerning Jesus
Mark 5 – Spirit Testimony Concerning Jesus
In reading Mark, we see the use of testimony in the proof of Jesus’ identity. Proof not in the very limited sense of recreating a test result, but in the sense of testimony of witnesses. That list as presented in the gospels if very broad and includes those who rejected Him! If you have never considered reading the gospels this way, I would suggest doing so and start with Mark’s gospel (as that is the one we are currently reading).
Here in chapter 5 we are introduced to the testimony of spirit beings, and in this case they are ‘evil spirits’.
We wish we had more information on what they knew about Jesus before He became flesh. What we do know is that they ‘knew’ he was the Son of the Most High God, that He could (and we learn later WOULD) bring torment upon them. We also see, that though they knew this, they yet remained rebellious BUT obeyed his commands to them – ‘come out’ and they did! Mark will mention this several times:
Mark 1:27 27 They were all amazed, so that they debated among themselves, saying, "What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him."
Mark 3:11 11 Whenever the unclean spirits saw Him, they would fall down before Him and shout, "You are the Son of God!"
Mark 5:13 13 Jesus gave them permission. And coming out, the unclean spirits entered the swine; and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea, about two thousand of them; and they were drowned in the sea.
And later, to the apostles as His appointed messengers, Mark 6:7 7 And He *summoned the twelve and began to send them out in pairs, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits;
OK, now make your list! Reread the 1st 5 chapters and write down what they witnesses to Jesus said concerning Him.
