Seeking Character or Reputation? – 1 Tim. 3:14-16
“Know how to conduct oneself in the household of God, which is the church of the living God… Such conduct is part and parcel of discipleship. It is the display of our faith (read again Hebrews 11 and note the ‘by faith’ living of these examples). Then, notice how often this conduct towards / in relationship with unbelievers: Col. 4:5-6; 1 Thess. 4:11-12; Titus 2:7-8; 1 Peter 2:12; 3:15-16. Jesus addressed this saying: "Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16)
In the instructions concerning the qualifications of an elder, Paul wrote: “And he must have a good reputation with those outside the church, so that he will not fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.” (1 Timothy 3:7) But notice Paul here in chapter 4 instructs Timothy about CONDUCT. Reputation is the product of our conduct. Conduct will come from CHARACTER.
Hence, one must strive NOT to have a good reputation, but for the character that when displayed results in the reputation. THIS is difficult, we tend to get the cart before the horse. Seeking reputation without the development of godly character often ends up in compromise of truth and toleration of error/sin.
This balance is difficult but needed! How is your character?

1 Timothy 3:14-16 (14) I am writing these things to you, hoping to come to you before long;
(15) but in case I am delayed, I write so that you will know how one ought to conduct himself in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and support of the truth.
(16) By common confession, great is the mystery of godliness: He who was revealed in the flesh, Was vindicated in the Spirit, Seen by angels, Proclaimed among the nations, Believed on in the world, Taken up in glory.
