The People of God

One of the most powerful things we can do to bring people to Jesus is to clearly understand what the church is. You might wonder what does that have to do with teaching people the gospel? In a word, everything!

When Jesus promised to build His church (Matt. 16:18) He was peaking of creating a new people, a new community, that lives for Him. This is the picture we get in Old Testament prophecies about the church (Jer. 31:33-34) as well as how the New Testament speaks about the church (Acts 2:40-41, 47; Titus 2:13-14).

If we are a Christian, then we are a part of Jesus “church,” His new community of people that live for Him. As members of Jesus’ church, we are to live like Him and seek to become more like Him.

When we understand that the church is the people of God living transformed lives, and we are committed to living as Jesus lived that will naturally make people want to be a part of His people (Matt. 5:16).
