The Promised Land

The Land Promise to Abraham

Joshua led the people of Israel into the promised land and under his leadership they took possession of it. This was in accordance to the faithfulness of God in keeping His promises.

The land promise first given in Gen. 12:1; 15:18-19;

The land promise would take place in 400 years, when the iniquity of the Amorite became full. Gen.15:13-16.

Three more Cities of refuge to be built only after all the land possessed. Deut. 19:7-10

The time was right - Acts 7:17 “But as the time of the promise drew near, which God had granted to Abraham, the people increased and multiplied in Egypt

They were said to have taken all the land:

Joshua SAID so

Joshua 21:43-45 Thus the Lord gave to Israel all the land that he swore to give to their fathers. And they took possession of it, and they settled there. And the Lord gave them rest on every side just as he had sworn to their fathers. Not one of all their enemies had withstood them, for the Lord had given all their enemies into their hands. Not one word of all the good promises that the Lord had made to the house of Israel had failed; all came to pass.

Joshua 23:3-4 And you have seen all that the Lord your God has done to all these nations for your sake, for it is the Lord your God who has fought for you. Behold, I have allotted to you as an inheritance for your tribes those nations that remain, along with all the nations that I have already cut off, from the Jordan to the Great Sea in the west.

Joshua 24:14 “Now therefore fear the Lord and serve him in sincerity and in faithfulness. Put away the gods that your fathers served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord.

Joshua 23:14 “And now I am about to go the way of all the earth, and you know in your hearts and souls, all of you, that not one word has failed of all the good things that the Lord your God promised concerning you. All have come to pass for you; not one of them has failed.

Nehemiah said so

Nehemiah 9:7-8 You are the Lord, the God who chose Abram and brought him out of Ur of the Chaldeans and gave him the name Abraham. You found his heart faithful before you, and made with him the covenant to give to his offspring the land of the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Amorite, the Perizzite, the Jebusite, and the Girgashite. And you have kept your promise, for you are righteous.

Nehemiah 9:23-24 You multiplied their children as the stars of heaven, and you brought them into the land that you had told their fathers to enter and possess. So the descendants went in and possessed the land, and you subdued before them the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, and gave them into their hand, with their kings and the peoples of the land, that they might do with them as they would.

Solomon ruled over –

1 Kings 4:21 Solomon ruled over all the kingdoms from the Euphrates to the land of the Philistines and to the border of Egypt. They brought tribute and served Solomon all the days of his life.

They built the 3 extra cities of refuge - Joshua 20:1-9.

The KEEPING of the land was conditional on faithfulness to God and His covenant:  23:15-16.

The history that we are going to read is how Israel was unfaithful to God and how God destroyed them from off the land. He then, according to his promise, returned them to the land under Ezra and Nehemiah.

Jesus, the seed of David, is now King of Kings and Lord of Lords. His authority it not over a small piece of land in the Middle East and not for a number of years. His authority is over heaven and earth forever.
