Sins of Jeroboam
Sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat… an evil legacy
Some things become ingrained in the population. Once they are ingrained they are HARD to undue! Such was the idolatry of Jeroboam! The nations of the land where Israel lived all were devoted to various idols. The land of Egypt that they were delivered from worshiped many idols among which was the Bull.
There is NO excuse for such idolatry (Read Romans 1:18-32). Israel was even more inexcusable in this (if that be possible) for God had revealed himself unto them with signs and wonders. God made a covenant with them beginning with 'I am the LORD your God. You shall have no other god before me. You shall make no graven image to fall down and worship.'
Yet the first thing that Jeroboam did when he was made king over the northern 10 tribes was to make golden calves and instruct the people that 'THESE are YOUR GODS'. From that point on Israel was basically engulfed with the worship of these 'gods'.
God tells us that the house of Jeroboam was destroyed because of this sin which he made Israel to sin (1 Kings 15:29). God gave Israel UP because of the sins of Jeroboam which they practiced (1 Kings 14:14-16). After Jeroboam we begin reading the phrase "he walked in all the way of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, and in the sins that he made Israel to sin, provoking the Lord, the God of Israel, to anger by their idols." This basic phrase then gets repeated in the summary of almost every king of the northern tribes including:
1 Kings 16:2 Baasha of Israel
1 Kings 16:19 Zimri of Israel
1 Kings 16:26 Omri
1 Kings 16:31 Ahab
2 Kings 10:29-31 Jehu of Israel
2 Kings 13:2,6 Jehoahaz of Israel
2 Kings 13:11 Jehoash of Israel
2 Kings 14:24 Jeroboam II of Israel
2 Kings 15:9 Zechariah of Israel
2 Kings 15:18 Menahem of Israel
2 Kings 15:24 Pekahiah of Israel
2 Kings 15:28 Pekah of Israel
The summary of the whole history of the northern kingdom is stated: 20 And the Lord rejected all the descendants of Israel and afflicted them and gave them into the hand of plunderers, until he had cast them out of his sight. 21 When he had torn Israel from the house of David, they made Jeroboam the son of Nebat king. And Jeroboam drove Israel from following the Lord and made them commit great sin. 22 The people of Israel walked in all the sins that Jeroboam did. They did not depart from them, 23 until the Lord removed Israel out of his sight, as he had spoken by all his servants the prophets. So Israel was exiled from their own land to Assyria until this day. (2 Kings 17:20-23).
Sin is sin even if everyone is doing it.
Each person sins for himself and will answer to God for what HE himself does.
The sins of the fathers are often passed on to their children. It is NOT inherited in nature but taught and learned by nurture and example.
Those who are in positions of leadership must be especially diligent in their own lives for they lead others both in teaching and example. Hence teachers will receive a stricter judgment. This would include fathers, teachers, elders, and preachers - all who stand in positions of leadership.
