How Do You Read It - Luke 10

How Do You Read It

Jesus was tested by the scribe in Luke 10 being asked "What shall I do to inherit eternal life?" (vs. 25). This is the bedrock question of our existence. How can I be right with God?

Jesus points him to the word of God by asking: "What is written in the Law?" (vs. 26). As one reads the story of Jesus, we always see Him pointing to the word of God. In overcoming temptation, He knows, quotes, and follows the word of God. When dealing with religious questions, He quotes God's word as the final and definitive answer. While living under the Law of Moses, if one wants to know how to have eternal life, Jesus said: "Read the law."

Though Jesus was many years removed from the time of Moses and the writing of the Law, yet He understood that the writings they had were the Law. Though copied many times and no longer having the original manuscripts, it was still God's law.

I find it instructive that Jesus answers the question with a question: "What is written in the Law? How do you read it?" (vs. 26). This shows that Jesus accepted that God's word was revealed in the written law. The reading of the law provides for one to learn the will of God. Being a scribe it would be obvious to all that this man had read the law many times. Having read the Law he should know the answer (and he does!).

Implied in this is the very idea that such reading of the law gives understanding. The word of God CAN be understood. In fact, even though this scribe didn't want to comply with the teaching of the law, he yet understood it. "You have answered correctly" said Jesus.

Hence we can make a few observations:

  • God revealed is will to man.
  • God had it written down.
  • Such writing had been preserved and was available to be known.
  • One could read and understand.

We live under the New Covenant but these principles yet apply. Paul said: "... the mystery was made known to me by revelation, as I have written briefly. When you read this, you can perceive my insight into the mystery of Christ…" (Ephesians 3:3-4). God has revealed His will. God provided that it be written down. This writing can be read and understood.

When someone desires to know 'what shall I do to inherit eternal life" we must point them to God's word. Then we must also do as Jesus did and exhort them to DO what they learn. "Do this, and you will live". Hugh DeLong
