You Do ERR - Mark 12

You Do Err - Mark 12

”Jesus said to them, “Is this not the reason you are wrong, because you know neither the Scriptures nor the power of God?” (Mark 12:24).

Dead men can’t rise. True - UNLESS God steps into the picture. God created man and gave him life, surely He can cause man to live again. Even above this is the fact that God SAID. In their scriptures were the stories of such:  (1) the son of the widow of Zerephath (1 Kings 17:17–24), (2) the son of the Shunammite woman (2 Kings 4:18–37), and (3) a man thrown into Elisha’s grave (2 Kings 13:20–21). As Paul declared: "Why is it thought incredible by any of you that God raises the dead?" (Acts 26:8).

The problem with the Sadducees was that they started with their own preconceived idea and simply denied the word of God and corrupted their concept of God to fit their image of God. Thus Jesus was dead on concerning them: “You do err."

What caused the Sadducees to err is still the foundation of much error today.

God CAN. He is the almighty (Rev. 11:17). Job stated: “I know that you can do all things and that no plan of yours can be thwarted” (Job 42:2). Jeremiah declared: "Ah, Lord God! It is you who have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and by your outstretched arm! Nothing is too hard for you” (Jer. 32:17). God said “let there be light” - and there was. Thus Jesus said:  “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” (Matt. 19:26).

God SAID. While the power of God can be seen by observing His creation (Rom. 1:19ff), the character of God whereby He conducts Himself is revealed in His word. He could cause all men to be born of virgins. He could cause all who die to immediately pop back to life. He could… but He hasn’t promised. We err if we disbelieve what He promised to do, but we also err when we expect Him to act wherein He has not promised.

God doesn’t do everything that He CAN do. He will do everything He has promised to do. We need to believe that God can do what He choses but we need to know and trust what He has said He would do.

Many people hold on to a false hope that God will do something which He has never promised to do. Other people deny the very promises of God because they deny His power to accomplish them. Let us trust God with all of our heart, but let our faith be based firmly upon God’s word.  Hugh DeLong
