David: A Godly Example - Psalm 34

David: A Godly Example - Psalm 34

Today's reading is from Psalm 7, 27, 31, 34, and 52. These Psalms are traditionally attributed to having been written by David during his fleeing from Saul.

David is being persecuted unjustly. He has fled from the comforts of his home. He has had to move his parents to the land of Moab for their protection. He is being openly slandered by the king. HOW does he respond?

Looking at Psalm 34 we see David's response:

·      He praises God (vs. 1-3). Notice the list: 'bless', 'praise', 'boast in', 'magnify', and 'exalt'.

·      He speaks of God's faithfulness in providing for the righteous and encourages people to 'take refuge in Him' (4-10).

·      He teaches that people should fear the Lord (11-14).

·      He keeps his confidence that God will judge those who do evil and will deliver the righteous. (15-22).

Tough situations are not an excuse to do evil. Tough situations are not a reason to blame and forsake God.  Our love and trust in God should, even as it did with David, transcend even the most trying of times. Would you respond to these things as did David? Hugh DeLong
