King David - 2 Samuel

King David

As we open our bibles to 2 Samuel, we begin reading of the kingship of David. He was appointed earlier, but patiently waited until the LORD brought about the death of Saul. Under his kingship we will see Israel exalted as a nation. Through David many of the prophecies that have been given will be fulfilled.

We see the prophecy of Judah rising to the position of leadership over Israel fulfilled in him (Gen. 49:10). David will conquer Jerusalem and make it the center of Israel's government and worship. Through David, God will chose the place to put His name (Deut. 12:5). Though David will not be allowed to build the temple that replaced the tabernacle, he will acquire the provisions so that it can be built by Solomon his son. The great land promise, including the boundaries, will be fulfilled with David's conquests (cp. Gen. 12:7; 15:18-21; 17:8; and 2 Sam. 8:3). Under David's leadership, Moab, Edom, and Amalek will be destroyed (Num. 24:17-21).

Many hundreds of years have passed since these prophecies were made. God is faithful to His word. God does not forget, He just works on a different timetable than men do. Through reading about David we should be encouraged to wait for the LORD. What He has promised, He will fulfill.
