David's Son Builds a House - 1 Chron. 17

David's Son Builds a House - 1 Chron. 17

Solomon, the son of David, became king over Israel. He built the temple, a 'house for God'. Then, his sons were unfaithful and God removed the kingdom, destroyed the temple, and cause there to be no kings from David's lineage. Now, as 1 Chronicles is written at the end of the Babylonian captivity and the return of Israel to their homeland, the writer recalls the great covenant promises to David. There would yet be some 400 years without a rightful king on David's throne. BUT, we are not to think that so many years is any indication that God has become unfaithful.

A quick search of the New Testament will show David being mentioned nearly 60 times, because Jesus is the promised son of David.  “The record of the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah, the son of David, the son of Abraham:” (Matthew 1:1) ““He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David;” (Luke 1:32)

The Father himself called Jesus his son saying: "This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased" (Matt. 3:17); and again: “This is My beloved Son, with whom I am well-pleased; listen to Him!” (Matt. 17:5). Though the people rejected and crucified Him, He was "declared the Son of God with power by the resurrection from the dead, according to the Spirit of holiness, Jesus Christ our Lord” (Romans 1:4).

This son of David built the true and eternal 'house' of God: “...the household of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and support of the truth.” (1 Timothy 3:15) Thus, Peter writes: “And coming to Him as to a living stone which has been rejected by men, but is choice and precious in the sight of God, you also, as living stones, are being built up as a spiritual house for a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.” (1 Peter 2:4–5) We read in Hebrews: "Christ was faithful as a Son over His house—whose house we are, if we hold fast our confidence and the boast of our hope firm until the end.” (Hebrews 3:6)

This son of David has overcome and sat down upon His throne (Rev. 3:21) to rule over heaven and earth (Matt. 28:18). He has been declared King of Kings and Lord of Lords (Rev. 17:14). It is into His kingdom that we have been translated into (Col. 1:13). As His people, we have been made a kingdom of priests (Rev. 1:6, 9).

God is faithful! David's Son has come. Let us proclaim His faithfulness unto all generations. Hugh DeLong
