Who Is David's Lord - Psalm 110

Who Is David's Lord - Psalm 110

David said: The LORD said unto my lord..

This must have been a perplexing text for Old Testament people. David, the anointed king over all of Israel, who is 'his lord'? THE LORD is obviously God, but who this other 'lord' of David?

Jesus brought up this scripture: "Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question: “What do you think about the Christ, whose son is He?” They said to Him, “The son of David.” He said to them, “Then how does David in the Spirit call Him ‘Lord,’ saying, ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand, Until I put Your enemies beneath Your feet” ’? “If David then calls Him ‘Lord,’ how is He his son?” No one was able to answer Him a word, nor did anyone dare from that day on to ask Him another question." (Matthew 22:41–46).

Notice, 'no one was able to answer Him a word' for they didn't KNOW the answer. Like generations before them, this text was a mystery. After the resurrection of Jesus, Peter knows the answer! Concerning the resurrection of Jesus, Peter said: “Therefore having been exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He has poured forth this which you both see and hear. “For it was not David who ascended into heaven, but he himself says: ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand, Until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet.” ’ “Therefore let all the house of Israel know for certain that God has made Him both Lord and Christ—this Jesus whom you crucified.”" (Acts 2:33–36).

This lord of David is Jesus, the son of David (cp. Matt. 1:1). Though he became flesh, he was exalted to be king of kings and lord of lords. Though he was born as David's son in the flesh, he was glorified in the resurrection and given authority over heaven and earth. Though he was David's son, he is truly not only David's lord but lord of all.

He IS Lord, but are you acknowledging him as Lord? "“Why do you call Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?" (Luke 6:46).  Hugh DeLong
