Walking In Truth - 2 John

Walking In Truth - 2 John

As John has spent his life preaching the good news about Jesus, he now is an old man. He writes this letter and can state that he has great joy at seeing his work translated into the lives of his hearers: “I was very glad to find some of your children walking in truth, just as we have received commandment to do from the Father.” (2 John 1:4)

The older I get the more I appreciate this little comment. I have had the privilege of preaching for nearly 50 years, 40 of them with the same congregation. I have watched as people I have taught have had children, and now grandchildren. Some Sunday mornings these 2nd and 3rd generation disciples take part in our services. Knowing that I had some small part in such brings an inner joy that is comforting.

The foundation of this though is NOT emotion, but is TRUTH. Reread verses 1 through 3. John loved them IN TRUTH, they have been taught and now KNOW THE TRUTH and that TRUTH abides in them and will be with us forever. They find mercy and peace not only in the love of God but in TRUTH. And now, they are WALKING IN TRUTH. That is, they are “walking according to His commandments” (vs. 6).

One can only experience what John was experiencing by faithfully proclaiming the truth. What can you expect to see in the lives of people you have touched?
