I Am Not Worthy - Luke 7

I Am Not Worthy - Luke 7

In chapter 7 of Luke, we are introduced to a centurion of Capernaum. He was in charge of the occupation army of Rome. He was a gentile with authority over the Jews in the city of Capernaum. He had a servant that was at the point of death and there was nowhere to turn for help EXCEPT unto Jesus.

His Jewish friends come and beseech Jesus to help saying: “he is worthy” (vs. 4). The centurion himself, stated: “I am NOT worthy” (vs. 6). He further stated that “I did not even consider myself worthy to come to You” (vs. 7).

How would Jesus respond? Jesus marveled at such great faith! AND, Jesus responded by healing the man’s servant. Such response was not based upon the man’s worthiness. His sending for Jesus, his trusting in Jesus, his kindness to the Jewish people, even his building of their synagogue, none of this made him ‘worthy’. It wasn’t a matter of being worthy, but of turning to Jesus because of need.

So it is with us. It is not a matter of WORTH – but of grace, kindness, mercy. Such is conditioned upon our willingness to trust in God thru trusting in Jesus. We all have sinned, we all are ‘worthy of condemnation’, yet God loved us an provided that through Jesus we can be forgiven.

Let us remember that in the end, WE are UNWORTHY!  "So you too, when you do all the things which are commanded you, say, 'We are unworthy slaves; we have done only that which we ought to have done.'" (Luke 17:10).

How boundless the grace He hath shown
In giving Himself on the tree
    For sinners condemned and undone,
    Unworthy of mercy so Free!
