He Said “I am the Son of God” - Matt 27:43
Such acknowledgment began with the very birth of Jesus. His conception was by the Holy Spirit and NOT by any man (Matt. 1:18, 20).
The Father proclaimed this when He was baptized: “This is my beloved Son”, and again when He was transfigured on the Mountain: “This is my beloved Son, hear you HIM” (Matt. 3:17; 17:5).
Satan attacked Him on this very basis: “IF you are the Son of God….” (Matt. 4:3). Bob Utley commented on this verse: “this is a FIRST CLASS CONDITIONAL SENTENCE which is assumed to be true, at least from the point of view of the author; therefore, it should be translated “since” (instead of “if”) for English readers.”*
As Jesus was casting demons out of the Gadarene, they confessed: “What have you to do with us, O Son of God” (Matt. 8:29).
The apostles, after Peter walked on water and the stilling of the Storm “worshiped Him, saying “Truly you are the Son of God” (Matt. 14:33).
At his ‘trial’, he was asked to answer under oath (the High Priest adjured him): “Tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God” (Matt. 26:63). To this, Jesus simply answered, “You have said it yourself”. This was taken as blasphemy, blasphemy of God, an act that was punishable by death. On THIS basis, the condemned him to death and saw that he was crucified.
Paul would write that he “was declared the Son of God with power by the resurrection from the dead, according to the Spirit of holiness, Jesus Christ our Lord”. (Romans 1:4).
