My Years Were Few and Difficult

My Years Were Few and Difficult

When Jacob appeared before Pharaoh, he remarked: “…The years of my sojourning are one hundred and thirty; few and unpleasant have been the years of my life, nor have they attained the years that my fathers lived during the days of their sojourning." (Genesis 47:9)

Abraham died at 175, Isaac died at 180, Jacob is ‘only’ 130 and can see his end approaching. Looking back, he sees the unpleasantness that pervaded his life. Most (if not all) came as a result of HIS choices. He bought the birthright, he deceived his father, and he took the blessing. He married two wives and had children by the handmaids. He chose to favor Joseph over his other sons. And on it goes.

With all the promises that God had made to Abraham, what could his life have been? But that is always a futile question! We will never know what would have happened if what had happened hadn’t happened. But, we have today. We have the example of Jacob and his life. We are faced with today’s choices. Remember that with all our choices come consequences. If you want to look back on your life with joy, make good choices today. With all the problems of life and the temptations that they bring, choose God. “As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD”. Be thou faithful unto death (Rev. 2:10).
