Saul died - 1 Sam 31

Saul died - 1 Sam 31

What a tragic end to a life of promise. He was chosen of God, anointed by Samuel, proclaimed King over Israel. He could have been the start of a long dynasty – even as David who followed him. He was blessed physically (size and stature), but proved to small of character.

It was sad to again read of Saul’s life and see him spiral out of control. Jealous and anger, fear of the people, the baser things of life seemed to control him. He was given ample opportunity to turn things around. David himself spared Saul’s life and reproved him for his attempts to murder David. Samuel reproved him. Saul did repent, but it lasted about as long as morning dew.

Then he died, even as we shall die: “it is appointed unto man once to die and then the judgment” (Heb. 9:27). We have our own lives to live. We have our own opportunities. We will make our own mistakes. We have the choice of walking with God and living by His ethics, or, like Saul, we can chose the baser elements of life. Yet, in the end, we too shall die. What will be said at your funeral? What will be said when you stand before God in judgment? Chose wisely, for there is no escape from this appointment.
