They found The Book 2 Kings 22
Our reading today is an amazing tribute to God's word. God not only is able to reveal His will and have it to be written down, He is able to preserve it! The original revelation to Moses was around 1000 years before the time of Josiah, yet here they find a copy.
Its message had ever been true. What God threatened was still a threat. Time didn't annul God's word. Their disobedience would yet find judgment from God. Their ignorance of God's teaching did not lessen their guilt.
Today, there is a famine for the knowledge of God through His word. Such ignorance is NOT because the book is lost! God again has preserved His word and provided for us to be able to read and understand. Copies of God's word are freely available to all of us. God's word is living and enduring, and imperishable (1 Peter. 1:23-25). Our ignorance of it doesn't lessen our guilt. The judgment that is threatened is yet to come.
The people of Josiah's time tore their clothes, wept and humbled themselves before the LORD! (2Kg. 22:19). The reading of the book caused them to institute a great reform. God therefore had mercy upon them. Jesus promised that His word would judge us on the last day (John 12:44). How do you respond when reading the Word of the LORD?
