The Righteous Branch - Jeremiah 23

The Righteous Branch - Jeremiah 23

In chapter 22, God indicts and condemns the wicked king Coniah (also known as Jeconiah and Jehoiachin). He was to be 'childless', not in the sense of physically not having children (HE had children - cp. 1Chron. 3:17f), nor that none would ever become King* (Jesus did! - cp. Matt. 1:11-12, 16), but that none would prosper as king ruling in Judah. This is then followed up with the great Messianic promise in chapter 23.

“Behold, the days are coming,” declares the Lord, “When I will raise up for David a righteous Branch; And He will reign as king and act wisely And do justice and righteousness in the land. “In His days Judah will be saved, And Israel will dwell securely; And this is His name by which He will be called, ‘The Lord our righteousness." (Jer. 23:5-8).

One of David's seed would come, would become King. God's promise to Abraham through David was not to be undone by the unfaithfulness of Israel! Matthew opens his gospel: "The record of the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah, the son of David, the son of Abraham" (Matthew 1:1). Jesus has been raised to sit on the throne of David (Acts 2:   ). Jesus is enthroned no IN JUDAH but in HEAVEN. He rules not over Israel, but the world. Jesus now has all power and authority (Matt. 28:18). Jesus is king of king and Lord of Lords (Rev. 17:14). Those who put their trust in Him are translated into the kingdom of God's son (Col. 1:13).

In His kingdom we find mercy. Those who reject Him as king will be judged by Him. Is He YOUR King?  Hugh DeLong
