Reading Through the New Testament

Reading Through the New Testament

We begin our reading of the New Testament with the exciting story of Jesus as told by Mark. A general consensus among conservative Bible students was that Mark is telling this from his association and working with Peter.

Mark had also worked with Paul. Thus, he would have heard these stories many, many times. In a time when they had no TV, Ipads, Internet, Movies, etc., they would have spent countless hours talking and remembering. Peter’s life work was telling the stories of Peter. You can get a glimpse of this in Peter’s last letter that he wrote shortly before being put to death.*

Right from the start we see where we are headed in this story (verse 1): It is about Jesus (Jehovah saves). He is the fulfillment of the Old Testament promises – the Christ. He is the Son of God (this will be declared by the disciples, the demons, and by God the father – look for it!). He is also the Lord (verse 3).

If you get the opportunity, this gospel is best read in one sitting! This requires a little over 2 hours for most people. About the same time as a movie!

*2 Peter 1:12-18 (NASB) 12 Therefore, I will always be ready to remind you of these things, even though you already know them, and have been established in the truth which is present with you. 13 I consider it right, as long as I am in this earthly dwelling, to stir you up by way of reminder, 14 knowing that the laying aside of my earthly dwelling is imminent, as also our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me. 15 And I will also be diligent that at any time after my departure you will be able to call these things to mind. 16 For we did not follow cleverly devised tales when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of His majesty. 17 For when He received honor and glory from God the Father, such an utterance as this was made to Him by the Majestic Glory, "This is My beloved Son with whom I am well-pleased"— 18 and we ourselves heard this utterance made from heaven when we were with Him on the holy mountain.
