Demons Proclaim Jesus is the Son of God
For all the bad that is associated with demons, Mark puts forth some good things. First and foremost, they declare Jesus to be the Son of God. “6 And seeing Jesus from a distance, he ran up and bowed down before Him; 7 and crying out with a loud voice, he •said, " What do I have to do with You, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I implore You by God, do not torment me!"” (Mark 5:6-7). They recognized, as the Son of God, His authority over them, his power to bring punishment upon them, and his right to show mercy. Thus, they implore Him (vs. 7, 10, 12), and when He commands them they obey (cp. Vs. 13).
We are not told HOW they came such conclusions. They are beings of the spiritual world. They seem to have had knowledge of Jesus outside of our material world. However they came to such, the understood that Jesus IS THE SON OF GOD.
Their testimony should have weight in our appraisal of Jesus, but such testimony is just part of the testimony put forth concerning Jesus. They were not ‘prejudiced in favor of Jesus’, for they stood in opposition to Him. Such favorable testimony needs to be seriously contemplated.
Later, James would write that ‘even the demons believe’! “19 You believe that God is one. You do well; the demons also believe, and shudder” (James 2:19). And so they DO (not just did!). These things are written that you might also believe that Jesus is the Son of God and in believing might find forgiveness in Him. Do you?
