Betrayed as Determined - Luke 22

Betrayed as Determined - Luke 22

Jesus came to die. His rejection was foretold in the prophets (cp. Luke 24:44-46, etc.). The manner of death by crucifixion was prophesied. Jesus has spoken of this repeatedly unto his apostles.

Among the apostles was Judas. He had watched as Jesus calmed the storm, cast out demons, and raised the dead. He had heard the compassion of Jesus as he forgave sinners. He had listened as Jesus taught the people with authority. He was part of the 'in crowd' that had received enlightenment from Jesus.

Even with all of this, he betrayed Jesus. There were to be consequences for such betrayal! Judas was among the disciples as Jesus exclaimed: "woe to that man by whom He is betrayed!" It is difficult to comprehend how Judas could have seen and heard all this and still betray Jesus, but the fact is that he DID betray Jesus. Peter stated that Judas "was counted among us and received his share in this ministry.”  (Acts 1:17). The apostles then chose Matthias "to occupy this ministry and apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place” (Acts 1:25). In telling of this betrayal by Judas, Jesus states that "the Son of Man is going as it has been determined"

At this point, bible students often begin a discussion of determinism verses man's will. However that discussion proceeds, the fact of Judas' accountability still stands. Jesus declared: Woe unto him! He turned aside. He went to his own place. He betrayed Jesus.

Knowing and learning do not always lead to good choices! An apostle, with all of his personal instruction from Jesus, turned aside. Elders would be part of the apostasy (Acts 20:30). Preachers have turned from the faith and denied the one that bought them. They all were men even as we are. They stood by faith, even as all must. Some failed.

What makes me think that I am exempt from such? Jesus immediately warned Peter that Satan would test him severely. Our trust in Jesus will be tested. It will be tested again and again. Satan doesn't quit. Peter's advice and warning are still needed: "Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour" (1 Peter 5:8).
