Ephesians 4 and EACH Part

Ephesians 4 and EACH Part

“…  from whom the whole body, being fitted and held together by what every joint supplies, according to the proper working of each individual part, causes the growth of the body for the building up of itself in love” (Ephesians 4:16).

This is one of the key verses to an active, working, living congregation. Notice the inclusiveness of each individual member:  “whole body,” “every joint,” “each individual part.” Not all parts have the same function or ability, but each part has SOME function or ability!

The work of the spiritual leaders is to cause each part to grow in its abilities, the ‘equipping of the saints for the work of service” (vs. 12). In the words of 2 Tim. 3:16, this would include “teaching, reproof, correction, and training in righteousness.”

Backing up to the beginning of this chapter, one of the goals of such equipping of the individual saints is to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace (cp. Eph. 4:1-3). I find it interesting that the goal is to PRESERVE such unity of the Spirit. What the Spirit revealed about the God’s work is that there is ONE – ONE body, Spirit, hope, Lord, faith, baptism, and Father. Such unity was established from the beginning and we are EACH to live in such a manner to preserve it.

Specifically, we are to develop humility, gentleness, patience, tolerance, and a diligent spirit. When EACH PART is equipped, functions, and is growing in this we find a living, active, loving, and growing congregation.
