Our High Priest
Our High Priest
Chapter 9 of Hebrews continues the aspect of Jesus’ high priesthood mentioned in 8:1:
“Now the main point in what has been said is this: we have such a high priest, who has taken His seat at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens,…” THUS:
We HAVE in Jesus OUR High-priest. (8:1)
He was called of God the Father to this position. (5:4-6)
He was called on the basis of CHARACTER and not genealogy. (7:3, 6, the basis of the priesthood of Melchizedek)
Such basis meant that there had to be a changing of the priesthood as He was NOT from the stipulated tribe of Levi, but born of Judah. (cp. 7:13-14)
The changing of such priesthood meant there needed to be a change of the covenant associated with such high-priest. (7:12, 18-19)
He was called to not only function as a high-priest in offering up sacrifice for sin for (on behalf of) the people, but to BE the sacrifice. (8:3, 9:11-12)
It also signified the end of the earthly tabernacle/temple as He offered himself in the true temple, the very presence of the Father in heaven. (8:1-2)
Such sacrifice is said to have been done ONCE – once for all time, not needing to be repeated. (7:27; 9:12, 28; 10:10-12)
This offering is the basis of our forgiveness and hope of living eternally with God. (10:19-22)
Is He YOUR High-priest?
