Have you not read - Luke 6:3

Have you not read - Luke 6:3

Jesus had many religious discussions with people, even with Satan (cp. Luke 4!). Many questions concerning what God desired were debated. For Jesus, the bottom line was simply what was what could be read in their writings.

The writing we call the OT were held to be the Word of God. In these writing the will of God was revealed. These had been preserved and were available to be read and understood by His generation.

Many religious ideas of that time, as well as today, were simply the ideas of men and NOT the revealed will of God. Hence the repeated question:  “Have you not read…”  (see note at end).

Reading involved more than just ‘reading’, it was to involve understanding, accepting, and doing. “I believe that…” was to be replaced with “God says…”.  Let us follow the way of Jesus in our religious thinking… let us READ, understand, and obey.

Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God. Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father” (Colossians 3:16-17).
