What’s Wrong With These People - Luke 19

As Jesus enters Jerusalem for the last time, He has spent approximately 3 years preaching and teaching.

His word has been confirmed by signs and wonders which He did in the presence of the people. As Peter would say later: “Men of Israel, listen to these words: Jesus the Nazarene, a man attested to you by God with miracles and wonders and signs which God performed through Him in your midst, just as you yourselves know—” (Acts 2:22).

Some of the people make application of such knowledge concerning Jesus: “the whole crowd of the disciples began to praise God joyfully with a loud voice for all the miracles which they had seen, shouting: "Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord; Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!"” (Luke 19:37-38)

YET, among the people were the doubters. They had seen and heard much of the same things. They had been in personal discussions (debates) with Jesus. They had been the subject of some of Jesus’ most pointed sermons and illustrations. But they did not believe. They rejected Jesus claims. They denied that He was the son of God, the promised messiah.

Next development: they arrest him in the middle of the night and, after a mock-trial, they have Pilate crucify Him. How did they miss the truth? Apparently quite easily. Jealousy, envy, and worldliness of heart. Many different attitudes that they had caused them to reject that which was plainly set before them.

Things haven’t changed much among people. There are some that, upon being confronted with the life of Jesus, will praise Him and become His disciples. There are others, that even after studying such testimony concerning Jesus, reject Him.

Now, it is your turn. What are you doing in reaction to the testimony? These things are written that you might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the son of God” (John 20:30-31). Do you?
