Life of an Evangelist - 2 Timothy 2
Timothy was doing the 'work of an evangelist' (2Tim. 4:5). This is about more than the work, it is about the character of such a man. Timothy is instructed to preach, teach, remind, reprove, etc. He is also given instruction on how he is to conduct himself as a person. These two aspects, character and work, get combined to make up the man. What does Paul expect out of Timothy? It is an interesting list as presented in 2 Timothy 2. Notice how it includes both 'preaching duties' and personal behavior.
1 Be Strong...
2 Entrust to faithful men
3 Share in suffering
7 Think over
8 Remember
14 Remind them
14 Charge them
15 Give all diligence
16 Avoid
22 Flee passions..
22 Pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace
23 Having Nothing To Do With...
24 NOT quarrelsome
24 but kind, able to teach, patiently enduring evil, correcting his opponents with gentleness.
Back when I first started preaching, I read the advice of older preachers was to read 1 Tim, 2 Tim, and Titus every week. Years later, as I reflect back upon my life, I am sorry I didn't do this. I believe it would keep preachers pointed in the right direction. Such constant reading would add the needed balance of negative and positive in their teaching.
Brethren, we have a right to expect the preachers among us to strive to conform to such lifestyle. They have a right to our encouragement, support, and understanding as they live the life of preaching.
