Demand A Sign
Matthew 16:1 1 The Pharisees and Sadducees came up, and testing Jesus, they asked Him to show them a sign from heaven.
Really? The miracles that Jesus did were SIGNS – signs that He was indeed the Son of God. I quickly read through Matthew’s account and listed 25 such mentions of such signs (there may have been more, but this is the list I came up with). Notice that some are generic statements that He healed MANY people of which there is not a specific accounting of each one.
· Healed many throughout Galilee – 4:23-25
· Cleanses a leper – 8:1-4
· Healed Centurion’s servant – 8:5-13
· Healed MANY in Capernaum – 8:16-17
· Wind and Waves obeyed Him – 8:23-27
· Two demon-possessed men freed – 8:28-33
· Heals a paralytic – 9:1-8
· The woman with a bleeding issue healed 9:20-22
· Ruler’s daughter raised from being dead – 9:17, 23-26
· Two blind men healed – 9:27-31
· Demon-possessed Mute man speaks 9:32-33
· Healed the withered hand on the Sabbath – 12:9-14
· Healed a great multitude of people – 12:15
· A blind-mute demon possessed – healed – 12:22-23
· Walks on Water – 14:22-23
· Fed 5,000 - 14:23-21
· MANY are made well – 14:34-36
· Gentile woman’s daughter ‘healed’ of demon possession 15:21-28
· Heals MANY mute, blind, lame, and impaired – 15:29-30
· Feeding 4,000 – 15:32-39)
THERE WERE MORE AFTER THIS (see below). What is amazing is that they did NOT believe! Of course, they didn’t see each of these, but the testimony concerning Jesus had spread throughout the land and they would have heard of most (if not all) of these. It is not that there wasn’t evidence, it was that they REFUSED to accept and believe the evidence.
We now have the record of all of these, and Matthew went on to record even more including the resurrection of Jesus! We can add even more by comparing the other gospel records to this list. The question is not why THEY didn’t believe, the real question is how do you respond to such testimony?
