Tempted in All points like as we
Luke records the temptations of Jesus here in chapter 4. It looks to me like these 3 specific examples are not a complete listing of such temptations, as he was ‘led around by the Spirit in the wilderness for forty day, being tempted by the devil’. I guess they could be, but I don’t think so.
However, in the three that Luke writes of, we see a comparison of the temptation in the Garden where Eve saw “that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable to make one wise, she took from its fruit and ate; and she gave also to her husband with her, and he ate.” (Gen. 3:6).
Thus, the lust of the flesh, lust of the eye, and the pride of life. Such synopsis is also seen in 1 John 2:16: “For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world.”
When Jesus was tempted, the Hebrew writers affirmed: “For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin.” (Hebrews 4:15) And earlier: “For since He Himself was tempted in that which He has suffered, He is able to come to the aid of those who are tempted.” (Hebrews 2:18)
Having such a High Priest that knows the full extent of such temptation having never given in, we can have confidence that He not only knows what we are going through but He cares and intercedes on our behalf. “Therefore let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” (Hebrews 4:16)
