Lord of the Sabbath

Lord of the Sabbath

Lord of – ruler over. This carries some rather broad implications. The proof of this was in the very miracles that Jesus did in the presence of all, including his enemies.

"But the testimony which I have is greater than the testimony of John; for the works which the Father has given Me to accomplish—the very works that I do—testify about Me, that the Father has sent Me.” (John 5:36).

And again, “(30) Therefore many other signs Jesus also performed in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; (31) but these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name.” (John 20:30-31)

But being ‘Lord over’ not only meant that He knew the true meaning and application of the law of the sabbath (seeing that as God in the beginning He was also the author of such), but he fulfilled its purpose and had the authority to give a new, better, and different covenant in which the 7th day sabbath and its requirements are no longer applicable to His disciples.

It is recorded that on the 1st day of the week:

Christ arose from the dead on the first day of the week - Mark 16:1-9; Luke 24:1, 13, 21, 46

Thus, he was demonstrated to be the Son of God upon the first day of the week - Rom. 1:4

After he arose from the dead, Christ met with the apostles often on the first day of the week - John 20:1, 19, 26 [Note on vs. 26: 'eight days later' (using an 'inclusive' counting puts us on the 1st day again).

The church of God was established on Pentecost, the first day of the week - Acts 2:1-47

The Holy Spirit came and began His work on that day - Acts 2:1-4

1st Gospel Sermon preached on this day of Pentecost - Acts 2

About 3000 souls, the 'first fruits' of the Gospel (Lev. 23:17) were added to the church on that day - Acts 2:41, 47

The church of the Lord met on the first day of the week to eat the Lord's Supper and to do other things - Acts 20:7; 2:42; 1 Cor. 16:1-2; 11:23-33.

In the New Covenant we have these new things:

·A New Covenant - Heb. 8:13; 10:9-10.

·A new church - Matt. 16:18; Eph. 1:20-23.

·New Commandments - 1 Cor. 14:37; Mark 16:15-16

·A new Name applied to the New Day - Kuriakos - Lord's day, Rev. 1:10

Thus, for us disciples of Jesus, there is a new Day - Acts 20:7; 1 Cor. 16:1-2. There is for us the ‘Lord’s day’.
