Whatever He Says, DO IT - John 2:5
5 His mother *said to the servants, "Whatever He says to you, do it." John 2:5
Here we are, reading the gospel of John again. Here in chapter two we have the episode of Jesus turning water into wine. Of this John wrote: “11 This beginning of His signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His glory, and His disciples believed in Him.” ( John 2:11). We will go on to read of other miracles that Jesus did, but they all pointed to who Jesus is: “30 Therefore many other signs Jesus also performed in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 but these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name.” (John 20:30-31). Each story should enlarge your conception of Jesus – our Lord, the Christ, the Son of God.
There are so many questions that surface upon reading this part of the story of Jesus. What did Mary know already at this point of His life? What indications had she stored up in her heart concerning her 1st born child? What did she think He would do? Why? Some day we may find answers, but until then her advice stands.
Whatever he says… DO IT.
Lots of things that Jesus said, taught, and commanded did NOT make ‘worldly’ sense at the time. Yet, time and again, when people DID what he said, wonderful results came about. Filling wine vessels with water? At a wedding? Because it was the instructions of a visitor? What good would this do for the problem of the wine shortage? What will the worldly master of the house say?
WHY do what HE SAYS?
You are a servant, He is the Lord. Submission is the role of servants. It doesn’t make sense to me. Do it anyway. It looks like a waste of time. Do it anyway. I have tried it before and it didn’t work. Do it this time anyway.
It is a matter of Trust. The word translated ‘faith’ carries the thought not only of ‘belief of facts’ but trust. Trust is shown in submission, compliance, and obedience.
It is a matter of discipleship. “18 And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Matthew 28:18-20
It is a matter of Love. “If you love me, keep my commandments.” John 14:15 (also see 14:21; 15:10, 14)
OK, now sit down and make your own list of things He said to do. Read again the sermon on the mount! Read again the stories of the miracles of Jesus. Do we do only what seems reasonable to us, or are we doing whatever HE says?
