The Lord’s Prayer - John 17
It is almost a universal thing to refer to Matt. 6 as the Lord’s prayer. But a funny thing is that nowhere in the NT is it recorded that anyone actually prayed this. The good thing is that many disciples have realized that it is a model from which to learn about prayer. The NT is full of prayers – and they also become part of our model to learn how to pray. There are also instructions and admonitions about what to include in our prayers.
Here in John 17 we actually have a record of a prayer of Jesus. We notice first of all that it does not repeat any of the wording of Matt. 6. In your study of this chapter it is good to begin by simply outlining the various topics that Jesus prayed about. Then, note what He prayed to the Father concerning the various people he prayed for.
Most of us need to spend more time in this chapter and learn about the fervent prayer of a righteous man. This is a supreme example of such. It forces us to contemplate our own prayers. It should enlarge our conversation with God.
OK – now it is your time to not only read this chapter, but study it, contemplate upon it, let it teach you how to pray.
