Devotion To God
Devotion to God
Brenden Ashby
True godly character only comes from a deep devotion to God. But what is devotion? The Apostle Paul would say it is a life lived in sacrifice to the service of God (Rom. 12:1-3). Looking in the Scriptures we find that devotion to God is comprised of three essential components.
The first essential element of devotion is the fear of God. One of the characteristics of the early church was they had “the fear of God” (Acts 9:31). The fear of God is to have a healthy respect and reverence for Him. It is the fear of God that helps us to take God seriously and stay faithful to Him (Jer. 32:40).
However, one cannot be devoted to God by only focusing on the fear of God. The love of God is also a necessary component of devotion to God. John writes that we love because God first loved us (1 Jn. 4:9-10). When we understand that God personally loves me then my devotion to Him will grow exponentially.
A third component of devotion is actually a result of the first two. If we strive to have the proper fear and love for God we will find ourselves having a greater desire for God. We will be able to say with David that our souls thirst for God (Ps. 42:1-2). The godly person may be satisfied with most of their life, but the one area where they can never get enough is their relationship with God.
Godly character comes from true devotion to God. If we are going to grow in godliness we need to make sure we are first growing in our devotion to the One who can make us godly.
