Christ, The Church, And Marriage
Christ, The Church, and Marriage
Brenden Ashby
One of the promises of the Bible is that it contains all that is needed for life and godly living. Unsurprisingly, within the pages of Scripture, a lot is said about marriage. The Apostle Paul in Ephesians 5:22-33 writes about how our relationship with Christ should transform how husbands and wives relate.
In this section of Ephesians, Paul speaks a lot about Christ's relationship with the church. He speaks of Christ being the head of the church (Eph. 5:23-24), Christ sacrificing Himself for the church (Eph. 5:25-27), and how Christ continues to care for the church (Eph. 5:29-30). This shows us how Christ leads, serves, and cares for the church, and how the church submits to Christ; it is the model for how husbands and wives should relate to one another.
Throughout this section, we see Paul draw parallels. Just as Christ leads, serves, and cares for the church, husbands are likewise to sacrifice and care for their wives (Eph. 5:25-28, 33). And, just as the church respectfully submits to her loving Lord Christ, wives are to submit to their husbands (Eph. 5:22, 33).
However, marriage is not the only relationship touched on by Scripture, and the principles of loving service to one another are not only for marriage. As Christians, we are to mutually submit to one another in the fear of Christ (Eph. 5:21). This mutual submission is primary in the Christian life. When I live by this principle, Christ will transform every relationship for His glory.
