Kindness And Goodness
Kindness and Goodness
Brenden Ashby
While all the fruits of the Spirit are related, two can be described as twins: kindness and goodness. The Bible uses these two words interchangeably because they are two sides of the same coin. Let’s consider these twin fruits and how we can grow in these areas.
One author described these fruits as follows, “kindness is a sincere desire for the happiness of others; goodness is the activity calculated to advance that happiness.”1 When we consider God's kindness and goodness, our minds go to Jesus and the cross (Titus 3:4ff). There, we see how God’s sincere desire for the good of mankind was met with the actions necessary to bring that good about. As God’s people, we are called to embody the same sacrificial service that characterizes kindness and goodness.
What can I do to grow in kindness and goodness? It begins with self-reflection. Jesus says I am to do the good to others I want done to me. That takes some thought. Once I have an idea of how I want to be treated, I should look out for opportunities to serve (Phil. 2:4). Finally, I need to do good (Gal. 6:10).
If I focus on what is best for others, am determined to do good to all, and follow through with my intentions, I will find the fruits of kindness and goodness growing in my life.
