Why Study John?

Why Study John?

Why Study John?

Brenden Ashby

We continue our tour of the New Testament in our “Why study?” series by asking why we should study the Gospel of John.

We should study John’s gospel to know God. John shows us that Jesus is fully God and that by Jesus coming in the flesh, He has made God known to us (Jn. 1:18). John also gives us evidence showing that Jesus is God. So, to know Jesus is to know God (Jn. 14:17-11).

Another reason to study John is to strengthen our belief.  John wrote to us  to help others come to believe in Jesus (Jn. 20:30). John records many events that generated belief in others, like the miracle at Cana (Jn. 2:11). And even though we do not live in Jesus’ day and cannot be an eyewitness to those events, John tells us that his record is more than enough for us to believe (Jn. 20:24-30).

A third reason to study John’s gospel is so that we may have life. John wrote to us to show that by coming to believe in Jesus, we might have life (Jn. 20:31). John’s gospel focuses on Christ's ministry as a life-giving ministry. John wants us to believe in Jesus so we may have life.

John wrote so that we may know God, believe in Jesus and have life in His name. While we might list other reasons why we should study the gospel of John, these three are an excellent start to motivate our study.
