Those Who Mourn

Those Who Mourn

Those Who Mourn

Brenden Ashby

What’s good about feeling bad? According to Jesus, it can be very good to feel bad. In Matthew 5:4 CSB, Jesus said, “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.” We want to learn what Jesus meant here so we can continue to grow in kingdom character and receive the blessings of the beatitudes.

Let’s start with what we are to be mourning in this passage. Jesus is talking about mourning over our sins. It is one thing to recognize our spiritual condition without God (Matt. 5:3); it is another to be heartbroken over it! If we want the blessing of this beatitude, our hearts need to be pierced with grief over our sins.

Jesus promises here that those who mourn their sins will be comforted. What is the only comfort for a sinner who is grieving their sins? It’s forgiveness. Total and complete (Heb. 10:11-18). This is what Jesus came to do (Isa. 61:1-3 cf. Lk. 4:16-19) and has accomplished for us at the cross. All we need to do is accept His forgiveness and feel the relief it brings.

To be a disciple is to grieve our sins. When we grieve as we ought, then we shall find the comfort only Jesus can provide.
